EMDR Getting Past Your Past

EMDR is a powerful psychotherapy approach that has helped an estimated two milion people of all ages relieve many types of psychological distress. It seems to have direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. Normal information is resumed, so following a succesful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings when the event is brought to mind. You will remember what happened, but it is less upsetting. Patients who have suffered for years from anxiety or distressing memories nightmares, insomnia, abuse, or recent traumatic events such as natural disasters, shootings can now gain relief from a revolutionary new therapy.

Research shows that EMDR is rapid, safe and effective. EMDR does not involve the use of drugs or hypnosis. It is simple, non-invasive patient therapist collaboration in which healing can happen effectively.

This powerful short- term therapy is highly effective for a wid range of disorders including phobias, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders and poor self-image, worry, stage fright, performance anxiety, recovery from sexual abuse and traumatic incidents.
Many patients who have made slow progress in the past, or who have not benefited from more traditional therapies say that with EMDR they have finally found something that works for them.

A brief description of an EMDR session:

I use the Advanced Lapscan 4000, which was designed by Neurotek specifically for EMDR treatments.
During an EMDR treatment, I will support & help you to identify the specific problem to, and from which you would like relief & healing. I will then facilitate your calling to mind of the disturbing issue or event; what was seen, felt, heard, experienced and your thoughts and beliefs currently held about this event.
While focusing on the aspects of the problem, I will then ask you to track with your eyes the movement of lights on the Lapscan If eye movements are uncomfortable for you, the alternative modes of dual attention, bi-lateral stimulation can be utilized from the Lapscan.
This procedure facilitates the reprocessing of psychological and emotional material. Each person will process the information uniquely, based upon their personal experiences and values. You will be asked to notice what comes to mind during the process without making any effort to control direction or content.

During this reprocessing clients typically experience some assistance or resolution with respect to the problem. This can be simply viewing the event in a different way or a reduction of intense associated feelings. During a successful session you may experience powerful emotions, but, by the end of the session, a reduction in the level of disturbance will be identified. The changes that occur are purely the result of your own innate, health seeking processes.

EMDR does not suit or work for everyone. It is, however, a powerful therapy which can have significant & positive effects upon a person’s psychological and emotional well-being within a relatively short period of time

How long does EMDR take

Several sessions are required for the therapist to understand the nature of the problem and to decide whether EMDR is an appropriate treament. I will dicuss EMDR fully and privide an opportunity to answer questions about the method. A typical EMDR session last from 60-90 minutes. The type of problem and previous trauma will determine how many treatments are necessary. EMDR may be used with a standard "talking " therapy, as an adjunct to therapy.
